The long ride home finally ended. Sharon could tell that Nick was furious but she didn't care. Who was he to tell her how to act? They got out of the car.
"I guess I'll see you later." Sharon said as she walked up to her door. Nick stared at her.
"Wait," he said. He walked up to her. "What is the matter with you? Don't you at least want to talk about what happened tonight?"
"Well, you sure didn't want to talk about it during the car trip when you were giving me the cold shoulder" she replied coldly. Nick didn't know what to say.
"Look, I don't understand you. Just talk to me, tell me why you do these things. Why do you have to get so angry all the time? Why do you drink so much?" Nick finally asked. Sharon was enraged.
"Don't you dare try to interrogate me! What do you think you can just walk into my life and fix all of my problems? It's never gonna happen. Either accept the way I am or get the hell out of my life." She didn't wait for him to answer. She walked into her house and slammed the door shut.
Nick went home as well and tried to call her many times, but she never answered. He called Brian for some advice.
"Hello?" Brian answered.
"Hey, Bri, what's up its Nick."
"Hey, is that psycho bitch with you?" Brain asked.
"What?! That's my girlfriend you're talking about!" Nick screamed.
"Nick, listen to me. She's crazy. She's an alcoholic."
"No she's not, she just likes to drink."
"I like to drink too but any minute now her liver's gonna stop working! Plus she doesn't care about you or anyone else. I mean look at how she embarrassed us today. Its time to let her go, man."
"You don't know her like I do. She cares about me, she just has a hard time showing it. She doesn't care about other people because she's so used to people not caring about her. As for her drinking, well I don't know. I wish she wouldn't but I don't think there's anything I can do about it. If I try to talk to her about it she just pushes me away. She's not even talking to me right now."
"Well, you know where I stand. I think you're making a mistake. I gotta go, Catey's over."
"Ok, I'll talk to you later then."
They hung up. Nick wished more than ever that he had handled things differently that night. If he hadn't jumped on her back, she wouldn't be ignoring him. She said from the beginning that drinking was a part of her life that would never change. He decided to go over to her house and try to talk to her.
He rang her doorbell. Shortly afterward she opened the door. She knew it would be him.
"Do you want to come in?" she asked.
"Of course." He came in and they sat in her living room. Nick blurted everything out at once.
"I'm sorry about everything. I promised never to bother you about your drinking, and I broke it. I should have tried to talk things out with you during the car ride. I won't ever react that way again if we're having problems. You're all I think about anymore. I want you to be with me all the time but I have to accept that you just...don't like anyone. I'm willing to accept anything as long as you're with me. I love you." Nick said this last line with much hesitancy, but he knew he had to say it.
"I'm sorry, too. I'm sorry about not answering your phone calls. I'm a stubborn person. I'm not used to caring about anyone so much. I have to learn to make sacrifices, too, but it's going to be hard. And Nick...I love you, too." She said this so softly he could barely hear her, but he made it out.
"Also, I've been thinking. I will move in with you after this year."
"Are you sure that's what you want to do?" Nick asked.
"Yes, I'm positive." Sharon said, remembering the wad of money that was in his money clip.
"Sharon, I'm so glad to hear that. We're gonna have such a great future together. I can't wait." He went over to her and gave her a hug. They both stood up to go to bed in her room, as usual.
**********************************One and Half Years Later***********************************
It was February 8th, Sharon's 18th birthday. Nick had just turned 19. The Backstreet Boys were on a long break, and their new album was scheduled to be released in May. Sharon graduated from high school and was accepted to the University of Tampa after her junior year. She moved in with Nick and since he was on break from touring and such, she had the chance to attend college and live with him in Tampa. She had been living with him for about 6 months, and things had been going smoothly...for the most part. To celebrate her birthday, they were throwing a dinner/pool party. Sharon came home from shopping to see Nick doing some last minute cleaning.
"Hey sweety, is everything ready?" she asked.
"Yup, dinner is almost done and people should be arriving soon. What did you get?" he asked, looking at her armful of bags.
"Oh just some stuff for myself. Clothes...you know."
"Oh, that's good. I want you to get anything you want on your birthday," he said.
Sharon kissed him and walked upstairs to try on her new stuff. Just as she left, the door bell rang. It was Brian and Catey. "Hey what's up? You guys are the first guests to show. Take a seat in the living room." Nick said.
"Where's Sharon?" asked Catey. Surprisingly, she turned into one of Sharon's closest friends after a while. They had a lot in common, such as being deceptive and selfish.
"She's upstairs trying on some new clothes she just bought. Why don't you go up and see her?" Nick suggested. Catey went upstairs and left Brian and Nick alone to chat.
"Didn't Sharon just go shopping yesterday?" Brian asked. He still had his doubts about her.
"Yeah...you know how she is, heh," Nick said uncertainly.
"Hmm. You know its not like we're working right now. Why don't you tell her that money doesn't grow on trees? I mean you're having a lobster dinner for about 50 guests, you had a bar built in the house just for her damn addiction, and you just bought her a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. Not to mention her birthday gifts and all her jewelry and college tuition..."
"Ok Bri, its time for you to shut up. Why can't you understand that I love her?"
"I DO understand, that's why I'm worried about you. You're gonna let this girl ruin you!"
"Brian, I don't want to fight. Let's just have a nice night celebrating my girl's birthday, all right?" As soon as Nick said this, the doorbell rang. More and more guests began arriving, and soon it was dinnertime.
Nick could hardly see anything through all of the people and he needed to find Sharon ASAP. He hadn't seen her since she went upstairs to try clothes on. He walked into their bedroom to see her talking to AJ.
"Hey...AJ what're you doing here?" asked Nick.
"Oh, I was just looking for Sharon." AJ said.
"Yeah, so was I. Where have you been? You look great by the way." Nick said when he noticed that she was wearing a small black dress that he'd never seen before.
"Thanks, I just got it." Sharon said. Just then someone started calling for Nick.
"I better go see what the hoopla is about. Hurry up cuz dinner is in a few." Nick said as he hurried downstairs. Sharon turned to AJ.
"You know you can't keep doing this. Sooner or later Nick's going to find out that you've been calling my cell phone and paging me. I mean he just walked in on us together. What were you thinking coming up here?" Sharon demanded.
"Don't worry about it, Nick's too dumb to figure anything out. He sure is a blind fool to see that you're wasting every last cent of his money."
"Shut up! And get the hell out before I tell Nick everything." Sharon threatened. AJ chuckled and left the room unfazed. He was sure he would get her sooner or later. How hard could it be to get a drunk in bed? Sharon quickly finished her make-up and rushed downstairs just as people were sitting down for dinner. She found an empty seat next to Catey and took it.
"He came upstairs and harassed me some more." Sharon whispered to her. Catey was in disbelief.
"Tell Nick!" she hissed back. "There is no reason for AJ to be doing this. Unless you secretly want him to...." Catey gave Sharon a mysterious look. Sharon didn't answer and looked away. Luckily, Nick took the seat on her other side.
"My love, are you ready to eat?" he said, giving her a kiss on the cheek. Sharon felt so guilty. How could she keep something like this from the man she loved? Nick did so much for her, he gave her everything in the world. She vowed to herself to cut down on shopping...a little.
"I'm starving." she replied, and began cracking open her lobster. She called to the maid to bring over a glass of bourbon, despite Nick's wary looks. Everyone was having such a great time eating dinner, he decided to be happy and ignore her drinking. He just hoped nothing too crazy would occur.
