"One of these machines took my dollar the other day," he said.
I remembered that I had decided that if ever I met AJ I would play it cool and smooth. I made sure my jaw wasn't hanging open and prepared to strike a convo with him.
"Are you enjoying yourself?" he asked me.
"Yes, this is a bomb show. I'm sitting in front row center."
"Wait a minute, I recognize your shirt. Were you the one with the 'A.J. get down with this' poster?"
"Yes," I agreed happy that he remembered.
"That's a phat shirt you have on," he complimented me.
"Thank you, your outfit is pretty dope too," I laughed.
"The shows getting ready to start up again so we better hurry," he said as he bought a candy bar.
"I will." I didn't want this dream to end so I said whatever came to mind.
"So what do you do after concerts?"
He looked at me quietly for a moment and then he said, "Tonight we're going to get something to eat and just chill."
"Sounds fun," I remarked.
"Hey, wanna come with us?"
"Sure, can I bring a few friends?" I asked.
"How many?" A.J. asked suspiciously.
"Five including me," I said.
"Cool," he said. He handed me a Backstreet backstage pass-looking necklace.
"Show this to the bodyguards around back and they should let you through."
I took the pass and told him thanks. As he was walking away he stopped and came back.
"I didn't catch your name."
"Kelly," I said.
He repeated my name, smiled, and took off in a run through these doors marked Private. When I knew he was gone I screamed and hit the machine. I was actually going to kick it with the Backstreet Boys. As if on cue my film came out. I grabbed my film and ran back into the amphitheater. I couldn't wait to tell Shannah and the others.
"What took you so long?" Shannah demanded.
I motioned Hazel, Jessica, and Dominique over. They leaned over to us and I began my tale.
"You're shittin' me? We're going to kick it with Backstreet?" Hazel asked.
"Yes, I swear."
The show restarted and we stopped talking. On "Get Down" A.J. was on the ground and doing all kinds of freaky things. On "Hey Mr. D.J." I could've sworn A.J. pointed to me. Suffice to say I screamed as loud and as much as I could. By the time they sang their last song "All I have to give" I was ready for the concert to end. When it ended they introduced themselves and the band and thanked everyone for coming out. The doors opened and everyone piled out.
We all gathered around the film machine and I told them in more detail our meeting.
"So when do we go into the door marked Private?" Hazel asked.
"Let's wait 45 minutes do they can shower and stuff," I suggested.
In the meanwhile we discussed the highlights of the concert. Jessica loved when B-Rok sang his part in "I'll never break Your Heart". Finally, I pulled out the pass from my pocket and led them to the door. It opened pretty easy and we continued. There was another door at the end of the hallway guarded by a huge bodyguard. I showed him the pass and we were let through. We exited in the back of the theater where the trams drove through.
"Okay you guys remember when you see them don't freak out, just stay calm," I reminded them.
There was a huge bus parked in front of us. The doors opened and out walked the Backstreet Boys. Jessica gasped and Hazel squealed. They all introduced themselves and we introduced ourselves.
"SO you're the one with the all I have to give poster?" Howie asked Shannah.
"Yeah," she agreed.
"Why don't we finish getting acquainted on the bus?" A.J. suggested.
We all boarded the bus and headed to the rec room/den in the rear of the bus. There were couches, a tv and a vcr. We sat down and the bus started up.
"So where are we headed?" Dominique asked Kevin.
I noticed that everyone had paired off. I was sitting next to A.J., Shannah with Howie, Brian with Jessica, and so on.
"McDonalds," A.J. laughed.
"I knew it," I said.
"Did you?" he asked me.
He turned those gorgeous brown eyes on me and I wanted to melt. He was so fine. I could not believe I was sitting next to Bone from BsB. We pulled up in McDonalds and we got out to order. Howie was so sweet as he helped Shannah out of the bus. We ordered our food and then took it back to the bus to eat. We all talked, but mostly laughed because Nick was telling jokes.
After we ate we decided to go to the beach for some midnight laughs. We all ran off the bus (reminded me of the end of As Long As You Love Me) and into the sand. Nick had tapped Hazel and they were chasing each other all around the beach. Kevin and Dominique were walking on the sidewalk talking as were Howie and Shannah, but they were in the opposite direction. Now A.J. and I were a little bit more low key. We were near the edge of the water talking.
"So did you get your film?" he asked.
"Yeah," I said emphasizing the word with a click of my camera. Like any smart person I had bought a few more rolls of film and was taking pictures of whatever I could that included the BsBs. I had a bunch of candid shots already. Nick and Hazel ran over to us grinning like fools.
"Let's have a piggy-back race," he said.
"I don't know," I said.
"Come on," A.J. urged. "We can beat them."
I was feeling kind of lucky. I mean hadn't I met A.J. McLean and was currently kicking it with him?
"Okay," I said.
I jumped on A.J.'s back, as did Hazel to Nick. I was on Bone's back, I screamed to myself. Hazel and I counted to three and we were off. It was a fun race until... the fall. A.J. and I were winning when out of nowhere comes Nick bumping us to the side. It all happened in a matter of seconds. A.J. swerved dangerously and I went flying. Somehow I ended up sitting waist deep in water. I was soaking wet from the waist down. At first I was so embarrassed, but then they began to laugh.
"It's not funny," I said.
"You should see yourself Kelly," A.J. laughed.
I was getting mad besides being embarrassed. I could feel my underwear molding to my wet body. I stood up out of the water and stomped into the sand towards the bus. How was I supposed to get dry?? I passed Shannah and Howie on my way to the bus.
"Kelly, what happened?" she asked.
"Nick," I said.
"Kelly wait!" A.J. said.
I continued to walk even when A.J. appeared on my side.
"I'm sorry for laughing."
"Apology accepted," I growled.
"Come on, admit it- it was hilarious."
I stopped and stared at him as if he had sprouted two heads. Funny he says??!! "What is so funny about this? I fell in the water ON MY ASS in front of a guy who I was trying my best to impress," I explained.
Too late I realized what I'd said. I turned around and ran into the bus. By the sound of his steps I knew A.J. was following me. I stopped at the bathroom and went in. I wanted to cry as I took a look at myself. The bottom half of my body was wet and my pants were sticking to my legs. To top it off there was drying sand on my jeans.
A.J. stood in the doorway and said, "I'm sorry about your jeans. Why don't you wear a pair of mine home?" He handed me a pair of blue jeans and I couldn't help but smile. How nice! I took the jeans and closed the door to change. I washed off as much sand as I could and put on A.J.'s jeans. They fell low on my hips, but hey I wanted a little skin to show. I walked out and there stood A.J.
"You look better in those then I ever did," he joked.
"Eat your heart out," I smiled as I modeled in front of him.
He took my hand and we walked back outside. We stayed away from the water and stayed low key in the back of the bus. For almost an hour we just talked, laughed, and joked. I was showing him this one dance when I tripped and flew straight into his arms. I looked up into his eyes and fell into those brown depths. I made the mistake of looking at his lips because then I wanted to kiss them. Somehow our heads dipped and our lips met. DAMN, HE WAS A BOMB ASS KISSER! Our kiss seemed to go on and on and on. "Whoa mama, we should hose them down," Nick joked. Then we heard a bunch of laughter as everyone laughed.
A.J. and I broke apart and smiled sheepishly. "I think we need to leave now, it's getting late," Kevin said.
I nodded my head in agreement. The ride back to the theater was so much fun. We all told jokes and watched movies. When we arrived I stepped off the bus and A.J. walked Shannah and I to the car.
"I had a lot of fun," I said.
"Me too," he said.
I handed him a piece of paper with my number, my email address and my screen name on the back.
"When can I see you again?" he asked me.
"Is tomorrow soon enough"? I asked.
"Perfect."
"I'll call you," he said.
I nodded my head and smiled as he kissed my cheek.
