Literature
As far as I see our society, I feel that reading is not a very commom
activity among young people. But those who reads seems to be brighter
than the others. Literature is a good way to speculate about how we
are, how we were and how we should be. It's the best way to escape
from the reality, living in a very own world created by imagination.
I like to read fiction books in general, and I prefer science fiction.
Short stories are really good, because you don't miss the spot easily.
Poetry is a great way to reach the human spirit, with emotion and
sincerity. And I admire who is able to put what's in one's mind in a
text. It's really a gift. I tried, but I feel I'm too superficial while
writing. So I read.
Let me recommend you some writers and their books. I'd like you to
correct me if they don't spell alright, because most of these books
I've read in Portuguese, and I may commit a mistake saying their titles
in English.
- ASSIS, Machado de
Dom Casmurro - If you have
a little clue about brazilian literature, you've heard about the story
of Bentinho and Capitu. It's one of the most discussed topics among
intelectuals around here. Did Capitu really betrayed Bentinho?!?
- BANDEIRA, Manuel
This is a brazilian poet. His poetry really touched my soul. I wish his
poems were publish in other languages. He lived most of the time waiting
for the death, because he had tuberculosis, and there were no cure.
- CLANCY, Tom
Hunt for Red October -
Great underwater story. At least, people can see that russians have
brain... No Harrison Ford, no movie.
Clear and Present Danger -
Is Jack Ryan a new Rambo in suits? At least he has class, and is
involved in a nice story. You may watch the movie without regret.
- CRICHTON, Michael
Jurassic Park - I was always
attracted by dinossaurs. And I became a great fan of Dr. Ian Malcolm.
Don't watch the movie...
Congo - A great story. All
of a sudden, I realized how can greed interfere in one's mind. Don't
watch the movie either...
Disclosure - A good story.
Here we see not only men are the great vilains around here... Men and
women: equal rights, equal obligations. You may watch the movie, if you
want...
Sphere - In my opinion, this
is the best story this guy ever created! And, once more, we're not
alone in the universe... but our companions remain undiscovered. Go
watch the movie right now!
- GAARDER, Jostein
Sophie's World - Great literature,
as far as you'd like to have a clue about what's Philosophy and its
history. But if you're interested in a good story, this one could be
a pain in your head. Never saw the movie - it's made in Norway.
- HERBERT, Frank
Dune - It's a complete,
well-structured universe in which it's developed a fantastic story.
Muad'Dib is not Superman, but he's almost there... Nice movie (I still
want to see the Sci-Fi Channel version). Just one question: if Arrakis
has no forests and no oceans, where do the atmosphere and the oxigen
come from?!?
- ORWELL, George
1984 - The Big Brother is
really terrible. This society has a vital lack of freedom, and when we
realize we don't live like them, that's a great relief. George Orwell
is fantastic. He really knows how to criticize social structures. I've
never seen the movie, but it should be nice!
Animal Farm - "All animals
are equal, but some are more equal than others." Fantastic story. It's
easy to understand why Socialism have failed...
- POE, Edgar Allan
His stories are superb! It was the first foreign writer that I wrote,
when I was about 11.
- TELLES, Lygia Fagundes
She's a soft version of Edgar Allan Poe. In fact, she has her own
style and a great personality. One of the best contemporany brazilian
writers.
"Who cares?
The time is near."
