CONTINUATION (THE EMI-ODEON PHASE)
Kim holded the singular distintion of being the only artist to simultaneously have a solo, duet and trio on the chart at the same time. She did it in 1984 with the singles "What About Me" (with Kenny Rogers and James Ingram) "Make No Mistake, He´s Mine" (with Barbra Streisand), and her own "Invitation To Dance". "What About Me" (#15), " Make No Mistake, He´s Mine" (#51) and " Invitation To Dance" weren't included in her followed album. " Invitation To Dance" was released as single and it was also included in "That's Dancin'!" soundtrack.
Kim Carnes wrote in her inserts of "Gypsy Honeymoon" liner notes: "Jon Peters called one day and asked if I would write a song that would work as a duet with Barbra Streisand . In one of those rare moments that you wish for as a songwriter, I went to the piano and did't get up until the song was finished. Barbra had recorded two songs of mine on previous albums and on this cut I was very honored to sing with her" . (Note: Carnes' songs recorded by Streisand are "Love Comes From Unexpected Places" and "Stay Away"). Kenny Rogers and Ronnie Milsap would cut this song as "Make No Mistake, She´s Mine " and it would became a chart-topper in 1987. January 28, 1985 - Mrs. Carnes was one of the select few stars to appear on the "Usa For Africa" single "We Are The World". Kim sung the line "When we stand together as one". United Support of Artists for Africa ("Usa For Africa") was a non-profit corporation formed to help the milions of suffering people in Africa and the United States.
45 U.S. pop stars united to fight famine with a song. The singers showed up for no salary. All profits realized by CBS Records from the sale of "We Are The World" contributed to USA For Africa. "That was really a memorable, wonderful, wonderful night" - Kim admited to Ken Paulson in one 2003 interview. June, 1985 - For the second time Kim co-produced her album : "Barking At Airplanes". "Producing myself was an incredibly big step," she said. "It was the first album where every note was precisely the way I wanted it to sound." The album peaked #48 and included 2 hits: "Crazy In The Night (Barking At Airplanes)" (#15) and "Abadabadango" (#67). It was a pretty happy album, though its sales were solid rather than spectacular.
Ry Cooder played brilliantly on the track "Rough Edges" along the wonderful vocals on the chorus provided by Martha Davis (The Motels) and James Ingram. This is one of her "heart" favorites. As a backing singer she recorded with Jimmy Barnes ("I'd Die To Be With You Tonight" from "For The Working Class Man" LP) and Dwight Twilley ("Hold On" from "Wild Dogs" LP). From the following year comes the last Kim's album released by EMI-Odeon: "Lighthouse." The album was full of pretty upbeat songs - even with titles like "Love Me Like you Never Did Before." She was back with producer Val Garay this time. The single "Divided Hearts" reached #79 and the album peaked #116. Second Kim's son was borned: Ry Ellingson. In 1987 she sung the title song to the movie, "Summer Heat": "The Heart Must have A Home" (written by Will Jeannings). She also duetted with Jeffrey Osborne in "My Heart Has A Mind Of It's Own," from "Spaceballs" soundtrack.
