Current Happenings in the Garden

Thanks to a couple of nice weekends here in the DC area, I've been able to make alot of progress on digging new flower beds (and in return eliminating more grass from my back yard! Yeah). When I get more time I'll post pictures of my progress. I've also started working on a small pond in the back yard. One part of my yard has a pretty substantial slope and what I'm doing is digging out a part of the slope and putting in a liner. I'll then add a small waterfall to complete the pond. I'll post a picture of what I've done so far (please be patient with me) which will explain what I'm doing much better.

Here is a look at the first bed that that I was able to finish. This bed features a Crepe Myrtle and a Korean Spice Vibernum along with some other perennials.

Here is the second bed that was originally started to have a place to put my Red Twig Dogwood. I added a bunch of Hostas and Astilbes that I bought this year. A few accent plants (Lantana, Vera Jameson Sedum, and another Crepe Myrtle) along with some annuals round out this bed.

Here is the third bed which required the most work. The first step was to remove all the grass from the area.

Then after finding that most of the so called "soil" was nothing but pure clay and rocks,I needed to excavate the entire bed to a depth of about 1 ft.

I replaced this with some real organic material and then went on a shopping spree for plants (which are shown here pre- planted).

I then planted everything and applied a healthy layer of mulch over the entire bed. As you can see there is a Crepe Myrtle in this bed also (are you starting to see a trend :).

That's all for now... Please come back because I am updating my progress (although slowly).
