It's the song that matters. Always. Loads of beautiful songs have been written. Many songs exist in different versions, both good and bad.
Pick ten immortal songs, regardless of it's an original version or a cover. If Dave Marsh manages to list 1001 songs, you won't have any problem listing only ten. On the other hand... maybe selecting 1001 songs is easier than picking ten songs! Good luck.
