Alan Trammell
Detroit Tigers
Shortstop
In the decade of the 1980s, Alan Trammell was considered one of the best shortstops in baseball. Overshadowed by the endurance of Ripken and the acrobatics of Smith, Trammell labored in Detroit for 20 seasons, ending his career in 1996 with a respectable .285 batting average. He was selected to six All-Star games and was a four-time Gold Glove winner for defensive excellence. Three times Trammell finished in the top 10 in MVP voting, including 1987, when he banged out 28 home runs and drove in 105 runs while batting .343, finishing second to Toronto's George Bell. However, receiving only 15.68% of the votes in 2002, his first year of eligibility, casts doubt upon his entrance into Cooperstown.
