Dave Concepcion
Cincinnati Reds
Shortstop
A member of the "Big Red Machine" of the 1970s, Concepcion was overshadowed by teammates such as Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Tony Perez, three of which are Hall of Famers. Concepcion was the best defensive shortstop in the majors in the 1970s, winning the Gold Glove Award five times (1974-1977, 1979). He was named to the All-Star team 9 times in his 19-year career, and finished in the Top 10 NL MVP voting twice, including 1981, when he was third in the league in hits and doubles, and fifth in RBI. Had Concepcion played for a team with fewer stars than the Reds, it is likely more would be aware of his place in baseball history and a spot in Cooperstown would be his.
