Don Mattingly
New York Yankees, First Base
"Donnie Baseball" was one of the most popular players of the 1980s and early 1990s. He represented the Yankees in the All-Star game each year from 1984 through 1989, hitting at least 20 home runs and driving in at least 100 runs each season during that span with the exception of 1988. With 211 hits, 48 doubles, 35 home runs, and a league-leading 145 runs batted in, Mattingly was named the 1985 MVP by the BBWAA and the Sporting News Major League Player of the Year. In 13 full seasons in the majors, he won the Rawlings AL Gold Glove Award 9 times at first base. Add to that 2153 career hits, 1099 career runs batted in, a .307 lifetime batting average, and a good relationship with the New York media. However, having received only 28.16% of votes in his first year of eligibility seems to make him a long-shot at best for inshrinement.
