Jim Rice
Boston Red Sox
Outfield, Designated Hitter
Not many hitters were as feared in the late 1970s and 1980s as Jim Rice. A 16-year veteran, Rice went to the All-Star game eight times and batted .300 or better in seven seasons. With 382 home runs, he is currently tied for 38th on the all-time list. Rice finished 2nd to Fred Lynn in 1975 American League Rookie of the Year voting, and third in MVP voting that same year. He won the 1978 Sporting News Player of the Year award and the American League MVP award, finishing in the top five in MVP voting five other times. He was the league leader in home runs three times, and total bases four times. As dominating as Rice was, his negative attitude toward the media clearly has and will continue to cost him votes, and he failed to reach any of the statistical plateus that almost guarantees election, such as 400 home runs or 1500 runs batted in.
