MARCH 2001, THE ROXY, HOLLYWOOD CALIFORNIA
John Frusciante LIVE

There is only one way to describe John's show: fucking AMAZING.  Me and my 2 fellow Rockinfreaks (Harmony and Marene) got to the Roxy about 6 hours before the doors opened and hung out around there before the show started, making sure to be one of the first people in line.  The manager, Louis, came out and talked to us for a while.  He was so great talking to us and answering our questions and giving us the attention I feel we deserved.  He's a wonderful manager...he should get an award or something.  THEN, oh my gosh, THEN John showed up for soundcheck at about 4pm and we saw him walking into the Roxy and we waved and he flashed us a smile and waved back.  By "we" I'm talking about 2 girls from Canada and a couple others from various places like Washington DC and me.  The 2 that I was with were at the bar (the Rainbow) next door.  Then a little later when they were finished with soundcheck, the manager came out front again WITH JOHN and we got to meet him!  He signed some things and had some pictures taken and was kind of shy and gentle and sweet.  Being the nice, mellow fan that I am, I didn't talk much and just stood there smiling, letting everyone else do their thing.  I was thinking of having him sign my shirt, but changed my mind.  I really don't need a picture or an autograph, you know?  I see that as just being a type of proof to show it really happened and I don't need to prove anything to anyone.  I know I was there, and John- the reason I flew out to L.A. from Chicago- knew I was there and that is all that mattered. Maybe I would've taken a picture under different circumstances, but it just didn't feel right at the time. That lasted just a minute, and then John left.  My sister ended up getting the ticket my freind sold to someone else by accident because the person she sold it to never showed up so everything worked out perfect. The time arrived for the show and it just fucken ROCKED!  I was right up front and center.  The opening band (Midget Handjob) was so cool and had like 20 members (Keith Morris of the Circle Jerks and Black Flag fame leading) in it playing various instruments and banging on pots and pans and anything that makes a cool sound when you whack it.  On the last song they passed out drum sticks and pots and pans and things to the people up front.  Me and some others got to play along with them and that just rocked my world.  I kept a funky groove on a pot and beat the crap out of it at times the band started playing hard and at the very end of the song.  Ahhh..that was so great.  There was a break after that during which Chad, Flea, and my Anthony showed up.  It was very cool to see them there supporting thier friend.  I only got a tiny glimpse of those 3.  I saw Chad pull up in his orange (i think..) vintage car through an open door on the side and behind the stage.  I had to get up on the stage and kneel in order to look out above the crowd and see Flea and Anthony.  Flea was up above in a little room and I could see him through the window.  I raised my fist in salute and yelled "YEAH FLEEEEEAA!!" haha.. He probably saw me because he was looking in my direction.  Then I looked around a little more and spotted Anthony in the back with Yohanna (it was her, right..? Those two are just all over each other man...meeow baby!  haha I'm totally kidding...they're a beautiful couple) So I smiled and got down off the stage.  FINALLY, the one and only John Frusciante came on stage with a big smile on his face.  He was right there, not even a foot away from us in all his revived guitar-playing glory.  He was so close we could smell him.  He has a unique and interesting smell by the way... like Valarian root and maybe Ginseng.  He played, in no particular order, Going Inside, a couple of Joy Division songs, Fallout, some things from his previous albums, and lots of other good stuff that I'm too tired right now to try to remember what exactly they were...but it was all beautiful, his spit and sweat sprinkling us...Gotta love those small venues.  He broke a couple strings, talked about his girlfriend, his best female friend, said he was in love, said he was nervous, thanked us for coming numerous times, used his sense of humor and was just delightful.  He also took us back to when he was just a fan and saw the Chili Peppers at the Roxy and showed us exactly where he was during the show and how Hillel spread his legs right in front of him and how it made him very happy.  Oh, and he actually talked to people during the show!! You know, communicated with his fans...talked about the songs people were requesting and stuff...That's probably because he knows what it's like to be completely in love with someone's music and be a hard-core fan.  Thank you so much for that John... After the show ended I felt so fullfilled and grateful and I just loved everyone and everything.  I got to spend time before the show talking to people that were just as passionate about John and the Chili Peppers as I was.  I was so happy to have people to talk to on a deeper level about their music... Harmony  and Marene stayed after the show and sat down and talked with John and road manager Louis at the bar next door!  I have yet to hear from them what that was like. So.. that was my Frusciante experience.  It was a wonderful way to end my stay in L.A.  I love the city of angels, I love the Chili Peppers, and I love being alive.
