Can you solve...
THE CASE OF THE
CAMPUS KILLER
We've had other crimes committed at State," Dean
Davis told Detective Joe Harrell. "But not murder! Poor
old Cory..."
Harrell said: "I gather your caretaker lived in
the supply building, since he was in his pajamas."
"Yes--in a small apartment at the rear. Do you know
how he was killed?"
"Looks like he was struck by a baseball bat. It may
have been replaced in the racks, or left outside when the
killer escaped."
"And you're sure the motive was robbery?"
"All the cash was gone from the register. And there
was sporting equipment all over the courtyard. Obviously, he
tried to steal them, too, but Cory interfered. I doubt
the robber meant to kill him, but that's what happened."
The Dean groaned. "We've had other robberies. That's
why we built the Wall!"
Harrell had seen the wall. It was thirteen feet high
and surrounded the long narrow building. It was topped with
barbed wire.
"I know it's prison-like," the Dean said. "We're going
to plant rose bushes around it... But if Cory was killed
after dark, how did the murderer escape?"
Harrell hesitated. "There is a gate--"
"Padlocked at five o'clock, every night! It was still
padlocked this morning, when we found Cory's body. How did
he get away?"
The Detective picked up the list the Dean had written.
"You're sure these are all the students who entered the
building yesterday?"
"Everyone has to sign their name at the entrance. But
they don't have to sign out."
The Detective knew what he had to do next. The list of
names had to be shortened.
It didn't prove difficult. Most students on the list were
in team athletics. Their presence on the playing fields were
confirmed by others. Harrell soon pared the list down to three.
He went to the Admittance Office and asked for their files.
Near Far seemed an unlikely thief. He was the son of
a man who owned the local car dealership.
Near said. "I went to the supply room to buy some new
tennis balls. I left around four-thirty. And no-- I didn't
see either of the two guys you mentioned."
The Detective looked at the file. "I see you have a
few hobbies. Biking, tennis, mountain-climbing, auto racing..."
Near remained silent.
Tim Bryan was a lanky young man who answered
indifferently. "Yes, I was in the building, but I don't
remember seeing either Brita or Near. I checked out some
baseballs. I'm a pitcher, you know. That's how I got my
scholarship."
Next was Brita Filter. She was bitter.
"I pay my own way here-- no scholarship, no family money.
But that Near Far you mentioned-- he told me his parents
cut off his allowance a few months ago."
"You're quite an athlete yourself." Harrell looked at
the folder. "Track and field?"
"So that's it!" Brita said. "I heard that track and field
stuff was all over the courtyard! Somebody tried to make me
look guilty!"
When he entered the Dean's office the next morning, the
Detective was downhearted.
"All three students needed money," he said. "I'm sure
that's the motive. What I don't know is which one is guilty."
"There's only one way to decide," the Dean said ruefully.
"Find out which one can walk through walls!"
Suddenly, Joe Harrell's eyes lit up like two sunrises.
"You're right, Dean. And I know which student can do just
that!"
