Case Closed

.

The love affair between Goofy Medic and Jenny
Dyke had become common knowledge. Thus, when Jenny
Dyke heard Goofy Medic had been killed, she pulled
a knife on her husband, Rob, because she suspected him
of the murder. But the Dykes' account of what happened --
that they got separated due to poor visibility, and
searched for each other without success-- is true. Rob
didn't stay by the wreck, which is why he ended up so far
downcurrent.
Like Rob Dyke, Erika Medic was aware of the
affair between Jenny Dyke and her husband. Erika feared
the affair would destroy the partnership and wreck her
dream of owning her own dive shop. Erika planned to kill
Goofy in a way that would look like an accident: she would
cut his air hose, then once he was dead, she would entangle
it on a sharp piece of metal in the wreck. This would
preserve the partnership -- and give her exclusive control
of the Sausalito dive shop.
While diving at the wreck, Erika Medic unsheathed her
dive knife and sliced the air hose of her husband, Goofy.
When he realized what had happened, he grappled with her,
scratching her cheek and knocking her air hose free. But
when he seized her weight belt, and it came loose, Erika shot
up and away toward the surface-- a natural reaction which in
this case proved fatal.
The weight belt in Goofy's lap is Erika's. She lost it
before she surfaced, which meant Cory had to use the anchor
line to pull her underwater for his rescue attempt. And the
only reasonable explanation for Erika's missing knife is that
she had it in her hand, and dropped it in panic during her
rapid ascent.
Cory's attempt to repressurize Erika was exceedingly
ill-advised, but it was not malicious. It is a common mistake
committed by inexperienced divers. More experienced divers
know that "the bends" are rarely fatal, and are easily cured
in a decompression chamber on land.
