Partridge retained Rob, the student. Rob acted
as if he were unaware of the killing when he entered the
inspector's office, but in mentioning the statue he gave
himself away. Partridge had said only that the professor had
been killed by a blow to the neck. Only to the other two
did he mention the statue as the murder weapon.
Rob had snatched up the statue and struck the
professor in a moment of rage. He had then wiped off and
replaced the statue, and locked the door with the
professor's own keys to delay the discovery of the crime.
