Well, I will hopefully add more to both FAQ's soon. I've also included a general FAQ
for the zsnes.
For the rowdy unofficial ZSNES FAQ click here!
It has the same info here and some info for hardware support.
General Usage
SDD: How to install correctly, register and update.
Yes, my version is a actually, RETAIL, and it is easily registered with my packaged regkey! This version to the 6.53 upgrade can be regged with the regkey but some users experience difficulty with it. This is sure better than deleting the io.idx file since it can be a nuisance to constantly delete it. Using the deleting the io.idx file is a method which I do not recommend.
To install:
Install the program, use my regkey to enter the serial number during installation, reboot the program do not open the program upon reboot, instead reboot again, now registration will be permanent After installing that version, go back to scitech and get the update. This will upgrade my version to the latest version.. It is not much of an improvement since it adds an average of about 5 video modes on top of what my version did after installing use the regykey again to register it again.
How to use the regkey: The regkey generates a code for you so you can register the Display Doctor in any name you want(well almost) The problem with the regkey is that it sometimes generates less than eight characters for the middle code. To remedy this, try using different variations of your name. So to register it, use ANY 5 numbers for the prefix and for the suffix and put the desired name in the box and the key will generate a code. If you see the middle code is less than eight characters, just change your name and it will automatically generate a new one. Again, my version of the regkey is pretty self explanatory.
And now for scitech FAQ:
How to use:
If you're running uzi though windows just make sure you got the video mode to 3 or 5 if
you have no uzi and run through the win95 ms-dos prompt try this command line:
zsnes -v 5 or zsnes -v 3
now for you power users that wanna go through dos: at the prompt type in:
c:\sdd60\univbe.exe -w
or
c:\sdd60a\univbe.exe -w
depending on your Doctor's directory this will have the doctor enable the video modes for vesa 2 and 3 next just run the zsnes:
zsnes -v 5
of course add your other options like sound and interpolationa and controller.
Windirect Error
If the following error is received when updating the 6.0 version with the 6.0a patch:
"Unable to load WDIR16.DLL" and/or "Unable to load WDIR32.DLL" Then
take the following steps: Delete C:\windows\system\wdir16.dll Delete
C:\windows\system\wdir32.dll Uninstall both versions, reboot, then reinstall 6.0. Without
rebooting, immediately install the 6.0a patch, then reboot. If the error persists, email
the support staff at [email protected].
ZSNES
NOTE: A lot of this information is already in the README.txt file, but is
here for reference's sake.
How do I get sound to work?
You have to type in [ -s ] sans the brackets. That command will enable sound. For example:
C:\zsnes\zsnes -s
How do I get
transparencies (ie. Zelda 3 rain) to work?
You must be running in 65536 color mode (not 256). To enable 65536 color mode, type in [
-v 3 ] for 320x240 resolution, or [ -v 5 ] for 640x480, both sans the brackets. For
example:
C:\zsnes\zsnes -v 3
Additionally, you can edit the zsnes.cfg file. Please note that your video card must
support VESA2 in order for you to run at this resolution/color. If your videocard doesn't
support this, visit Scitech Software and download
their Scitech Display Doctor.
Where do I get ROMs/images/games?
Sorry, under no condition will I give you an address. Just search for them yourself like
at http://www.yahoo.com. Please remember that it might
be a copyright violation to download games you don't own, depending on where you live.
Check the local copyright laws before using copyrighted software. (Thanx
to Zophar and Firebug)
How do I save a game state?
All you have to do is press the F2 key wherever you want to save a game state. A saved
game state is basically a saved game, except you can do this anywhere in the game. The
default save slot (everytime you start ZSNES) is 0.
How do I select a save game state slot?
Press the F3 key, and a box will come up with the numbers 1 through 10. These are the
saved games slots, just select with the arrow keys and press Enter to select one. The
default save slot (everytime you start ZSNES) is 0.
How do I load a game state?
Press the F4 key, and the game save state will be loaded up, automatically overwriting
whatever you were playing before. The default save slot (everytime you start ZSNES) is 0.
ARGH! I accidentally
pressed one of the number buttons and some of the images are missing/screwy.
You may have disabled one of the background or sprite layers. Just press the 6 number
button (not on the numeric pad, at the top of the keyboard) and everything should be back
to normal.
How do I enable the second player?
You must edit the zsnes.cfg file. Go down to where it says
Player2Device = 0
Now, change the 0 to whatever device you need for the second player.
Why don't these games work?
The ZSNES currently doesn't support these features - if anyone can find documentation on
these, head over to the ZSNES's official site
and send it to zsKnight or _Demo_.
Why doesn't ZSNES run
as fast as NLKSNES, or isn't
compatible as SNES9x, or isn't as cool as [Insert any
other SNES emulator here]?!?!?
If you don't like the ZSNES, go use something else. I think the ZSNES is the most feature
filled emulator out there and is the most close emulation there is to the real thing.
Sure, SNES9x has great compatibility, but guess what - its not going to be updated
anymore. Besides, if you didn't like the ZSNES, why come here? :-)
Where can I edit the configuration
for ZSNES?
In the same directory as the zsnes executable file (zsnes.exe) and look for a file titled
"zsnes.cfg" You can edit it with Notepad.
How do I take a screenshot?
Press F1 anytime during gameplay. There will be a menu where you can either choose whether
to take a screenshot or display the Frames per Second. If you are running in 256 color
mode, the picture will be saved as a *.pcx file, and if you're running in 65536 colors,
the picture will be saved as a *.bmp file. These pics will be saved in the same directory
as the zsnes.exe.
How do I display the FPS (Frames per
Second)?
Press F1 anytime during gameplay. There will be a menu where you can either choose whether
to take a screenshot or display the Frames per Second. The FPS will be displayed in the
lower left-hand corner in a ratio of:
Frames per Second being displayed / A maximum of 60 frames
Please note that the FPS counter will only work if "auto frame
rate" is enabled
How do I use Game Genie/Pro
Action Replay Codes?
First load up the game. Then press the ESC key to get to the ZSNES Menu. Go down
"cheat" and select that with the Return key. You should get to another menu with
the options:
Why is there a blank
tone where there should be a distinct sound?
ZSNES currently doesn't support certain sound DSP functions. This includes noise, echo,
and pitch modulation. Instead of hearing the correct sound, you will get a blank tone.
