Not only polystirol and gipsum are suitable to form our layout. There is another way to make mountains and valleys.
The needed raw materials are the same simple, cheap and easy to get:
Corrugated cardboard can be found in wrapping-paper waste of supermarkets and old newsprints in every household. The only things to buy are glue and adhesive.

First the corrugated cardboard is to be cut into 2-4 cm (1-2 inch) wide strips. The length of them is optional. Each strip should be strongly attached to the ground or framework of the layout. With the help of pillars in different lengths, hills and valleys can be formed in the model-country. After this, at right angles to the attached strips, additional strips are to be woven. In this way a regular pattern has been produced, which serves as a basis of our layout.

Finally tear the newsprint into little peaces and soak them in water. During this time the "cardboard-cloth" can be smeared with glue. After that it can be fully covered with the wet paper pieces. Repeat this 3-4 times to give a really stable construction. Allow the glue to dry 1-2 days and the raw model-country is ready to be further worked with traditional materials.

That paper-mountains save not only our purse, but can be used again when the layout must be moved to an other place...

Based on "Modelleisenbahner" 1996/11.
