Movies:
Well I have seen a few movies this spring & summer... the following is
obviously one man's opinion.
The X Files, Fight the Future - this movie follows the TV exploits of Fox's X Files. In fact, it is
compariable to a 2 hour episode with a huge budget. Overall the movie is excellent,
fast-paced and would be categorized as a sci-fi thriller. As always, Chris Carter
does an outstanding job in making sure that all the details that X File fans have come to
expect are present... and then some. The special effects are wonderful. The
script resolves several open-ended questions that the TV show raised... and then replaces
them with some new ones (you will have to see it to understand). What surprised me
the most was the frightening scenes in the movie... it may have been the doby sound system
of the theater I was in... but, it was definitely a "seat jumper."
Basically, all X File fans need to see this movie. If you are not one of them, you
may still enjoy it since the movie tries to explain in some detail why things are the way
they appear.
Deep Impact
- this movie deals with a meteor hitting the earth... "been there, seen that."
The special effects are not bad and the story does not try to be over involving...
basically, you are put into the position of witnessing the event(s). The gripping
portion of the movie is in its emotional stab that it makes into your heart about
the question of who will live and who will die. I found myself with a tear in my eye
too (must have been the onions on the hotdog)... it still makes you think. Overall,
the movie was okay, but wait for it to come out on video.
Godzilla
- this was a fun flick for a Saturday afternoon crowd. There were great special
effects that kept the movie fun. The script was sorta weak, but... hey, it is about
a giant lizard that tears through a U.S. city... come on. If you remember the old
Godzilla movies... this one takes, at least, tries to get away from the rubber suit
hero... to a more realistic giant lizard that is neither "bad" or
"good." Take the kids to this fun flick or take yourself... of course,
make it a matinee.
TV: There are several TV shows that the typical gamer would find
very interesting. The following are among my favorites. You will notice that I
have not included certain sitcoms, etc. - this does not mean I do not like them... just
that they may not be as appealing to the majority of gamers.
Millennium
- one of the best new creations by Chris Carter (you know... the
X-Files creator). This show revolves around one main character (including his
family) and his association with the secretive Millennium Group (which happens to really
exist). Frank
Black (main character) is basically a former profiler for several law enforcement
agencies. What makes Frank such a successful profiler/investigator is his special
abilities to see into the "heart of darkness"... to be able to "get into
the mind" of criminals (evil doers). He also has the ability to receive mental
images of things that have happened to things that will happen. The underlying theme
is that one portion of the Millennium group believes that the world is on the brink of
Armageddon - the date is 1/1/2000... there are so many days left. During this time,
evil crimes of violence will be on the rise building to the showdown between the forces of
light and darkness... between Heaven and Hell. This program is extremely well
written and thought provoking... and at the very least... wonderfully suspensive and
entertaining. Be sure to check out my Millennium page

The X-Files
- one of my all-time favorites. This show has created a
cult, as well as a mainstream following that spans many different demographics. This
show has received many awards and is currently one of the top rated TV suspense/dramas.
If you have not checked out this wonderful show... well, look for it on Sunday
night (Fox network) or catch the reruns on the FX (Fox cable) network every weekday night.

Bablyon 5 - is probably one of the best all
around sci-fi space series on TV today. The new season is proving to be more
difficult for the Bablyon 5 writers, but they have 4 previous seasons of material to help
build a strong foundation for this new set of shows airing this year. What made
Bablyon 5 such a wonderful epic is due to a mulitude of factors... awarding winning
special effects, excellent writing and directing, developed characters and most
importantly, the show was moving to a definite goal... another words, originally there was
a beginning ground, a middle and an ending (the conclusion of the Shadow War). This
gave direction to this series unlike most sci-fi shows who seem to be more eposodic then
serial. Definitely, B5 could be more closely compared to some of the
"cliff-hangers" of the past... but, with a defined sense of purpose and a
specific goal to be achieved. With the new season, the quest will be to find that
sense of purpose and goal again. If you want to check out more about B5... just
