A Takeout Double is just that. A double that says, "Hey, Partner! Take this double out and show me what you hand looks like."
Usually, when a Takeout Double is made by partner, partner is short in opponents opening suit. Example: East has opened 1C and you hold
Kxxx ~~~ KQxx ~~~ AJx ~~~ xx
With the above holding, you would make a Takeout Double. This would initially tell partner, "I have an opening hand and I want you to describe your hand to me. I am desperately looking for a fit here!!" Partner will now respond by:
(1) bidding his best suit as cheaply as possible (showing a weaker hand and only promising four in the suit he has bid);
(2) making a skip bid to the next level (showing a stronger hand and suit);
(3) bidding 1NT (showing six to nine points and no-trump distribution and maybe a club stopper);
(4) bidding 2NT (with ten or eleven points and no-trump distribution and a definite club stopper);
(5) bidding 3NT (showing an opening hand with partner and a definite club stopper.
On rare occasions, partner may pass your Takeout Double and convert it to a Penalty Double.
