For most of us, November 17th is just another day on the calendar. For some of us, it is our friend Jim's birthday. However, on the faerie calendar, November 17th is the day of the
Feast of the Faerie Scotsman. It is a day of much feasting and frolicking. Joyous celebration permeates the land!

Who is the Faerie Scotsman?

Why it's Jim, whose birthday falls on November 17th!

What Is A Faerie Scotsman?

A Faerie Scotsman is a rare breed of faerie. It is prone to drinking, wenching, and staggering. Ordinary faeries communicate with a sort of trilling noise, a cross between chirping and purring, much like toads, actually, or crickets. A Faerie Scotsman's vocalization is more like a raspberry, but using only the lips. It tends to be loud, harsh, and slobbery, which frankly owes more to habitual inebriation than any physical characteristic. A Faerie Scotsman is proud of the size of his kilt, but tends to be somewhat underendowed in the wings. Researchers have postulated the theory that this underendowment may indeed be the root cause of the excessive drinking, wenching, and subsequent staggering.

The Story Behind The Feast

Our friend Jim was for several years a member of the cast of a couple of Renaissance Faires. One year, he kept threatening to show up at dress rehearsal as The Faerie Scotsman and run around in wings and a kilt, making the loose-lips noise described above. A month or so later, we were inventing our own holidays to put on our Pressed Fairies calendars. When we came to Jim's birthday, it seemed natural to make it "The Feast of the Faerie Scotsman". (wenches only) (and Jim) (much wiggling) We laughed and went on with our lives. Fast forward to November 17th. It is the last day of the season of that year'sTexas Renaissance Festival, as well as, of course, Jim's birthday. Practical jokes have run rampant all season, and now we have the grand finale. Most of the cast members, their families and friends, are at the traditional end-of-season gathering at a local restaurant. Suddenly, three women jump on a table and call for attention. They announce that today is the "Feast of the Faerie Scotsman" (wenches only) (and Jim) (much wiggling) The crowd cheers. The largest man in the room is sent to fetch Jim. Jim is carried (slung over one shoulder) to the front of the room and placed on the table. Wild cheering. His shirt is removed. Wolf whistles and catcalls abound. He is then dressed in a kilt............and wings are attached. A plaid birthday cake is brought forth. E.J. Jones, from the Celtic band Clandestine, begins playing "Happy Birthday To You" on the Highland bagpipes. Everyone sings, of course, and then another announcement is made.

"Ladies, start your lipsticks!"

"and now, Let the Wenching Begin!"

On To The Wenching!
