Title: "Mental Pep Talk"
Written By: Drew Thiele

The doorbell rang again. I growled. This is NOT a good time! My eyes blazed in anger, and worry, as I marched toward the front door. Swinging it open, I momentarily lost my anger. An awkward female stood at the door.

"Hi? Um...is this the Halliwells?" She spoke quietly, somehow sensing the mood of the place.

"Yeah. Who are you? Now is not a really good time.", was my brusque reply, since I had no time to waste. I quickly surveyed this woman. She was about my height, darkened skin, black hair behind in a bun, a loose t-shirt, and jeans. Nothing stood out from her, other than a feel of..something, different. I couldn't pin it down.

She looked around uncomfortably behind her, and whispered. "I'm.. Lisa. Lisa, oh, I can't stay here. I need to come in. May I come in?"

"I don't know if you should. It's a really bad time...the others here have a really contagious bug..."

"Oh..I know they don't, Prue. I really need to see your sister."

"B...but ? How'd you know who I am, or my sister?" She readied a hand to throw Lisa backwards with a zapball.

She sighed wearily. "I'm telepathic. I'm one of the Tomorrow People."

I slowly moved my hand down, and reluctantly let "Lisa" in. The others in the lounge didn't know she was here, so were understandably surprised.

"LISA?!" Adam's voice rose an octave in surprise and pleasure. He rushed over to an visibly awkward Lisa. He hesitated, forcibly and visibly, taking a step backwards. "Uh.. Hi. It's been a long time, hasn't it, Lisa."

Lisa nodded quietly. She waved at Megabyte, and Kevin. They stared simply in startlement. Ami's attention was diverted from Phoebe's form, and looked at Lisa. "Lisa? Finally nice to meet you. This is Jade. This is..." A petite young woman timidly gazed at Lisa. "Rachel."

"Ah.. a new one, huh.", was Lisa's matter of fact statement. She wasn't really surprised, I took it. I had heard from Phoebe that all Tomorrow People usually know each other by their presences, or something. I turned my attention back toward Phoebe's form. I knelt down beside her. Rachel nodded quickly, and turned her attention back at Phoebe's still form. Adam continued the introductions, "This is...ah.."

"I know. Phoebe."

Adam crossed his arms, gazing at Lisa. "Lisa..it's great to see you, but..why now?" She took a forceful breath.

I looked back and forth at Adam and Lisa's body language. Hmm, a history, huh?

"Lisa..It's nice to meet you. Although...Why are you here?" My voice sounded uncertain. I looked at Lisa with puzzlement evident in my expression.

Her pose betrayed uncertainity, and the mannerisms of a deer caught in the headlights. Her quiet reply whispered out. "I ..I think..I'm here to help Phoebe."

[ What?!~ You mean all this time you've stayed away, trying to be normal, but now you're back? Just to help her? ], was a loud outburst that rang inside my head. Kevin's face contorted into a mottled purple visage of rage, and despair. Whoa. I guess I could hear the TP's too, if loud enough. Or was that through Phoebe?

Adam spoke quietly, but determination was strong in his tone. "Kevin. Stop it."

Kevin's pose shifted from anger, to ashamed, and concentrated on Phoebe's form. "Come on Phoebe. Wake up. Please!" His voice cracked, as tears rolled down his face. I looked into Kevin's face, and knew how he felt. I wanted my sister back. I felt absolute guilt and regret, for performing that spell, when I knew, unconciously, that it was a really bad idea. I knew that when we had accidently switched places (See New Thoughts: Resentment/Kevin's Revelation), that I believed totally, that she could not kill whatsoever, but since we did perform that vanquishing spell...I must have assumed... Never again! I clenched my fists in anger. Anger at myself. Irrational Anger at the TP's. Piper was quietly watching me, and laid a hand on my shoulder to attempt to comfort me. Piper leaned toward my ear, whispering, "Prue.. it's not your fault. We need to help Phoebe now. If you have to blame yourself, do it later."

I sniffled, nodding at Piper. I stood up, trying to compose myself into a stoic expression, and failing. I looked bleakly at Lisa. "How can you help?? Adam can't even heal her."

Lisa nodded with a grave expression. "Because the wound isn't physical. It's emotional and mental. Just as she went into the stasis, I felt a powerful urge to come here. So..I dropped everything, and was surprised to see it was Phoebe. You know.. I knew her when I was starting College. I admired her, going back to College to get a degree. But I guess we lost touch a while ago."

"Oh.", was my only reply.

Adam glanced at me. "It seems like most TP's now, usually break out, usually are friends or knew someone else who broke out." That made perfect sense to me.

Lisa gently shooed me out of the way, and gazed at Kevin. "Kevin. I'm sorry. I'll...try to do better." She touched Phoebe's forehead, gently. She screamed shrilly, as her body convulsed in shudders. Her head collapsed with eyes closed. Rachel suddenly rushed over to Lisa to push her away, but stopped at Adam's word. "No. Let her."

/ [ Phoebe!! Where are you!? ]

Lisa saw herself in a grey expanse of mist, aimless, no boundaries, and no distinctive landmarks. She felt lost, yet not alone. Like others were there with her. She suddenly saw images, floating around her.

Phoebe, Piper, Prue, all curled up on the couch, laughing, at the scary movie they were watching, and a pillow fight ensues, over who's the favorite lead actor.

Phoebe kneeling on the Manor's doorstep, crying, because Prue had locked her out.

Piper running to Phoebe, crying, because of a boyfriend who just dumped her.

Phoebe sneaking away to see Cole, behind Prue and Piper's backs.

Memories of when Phoebe, Piper, and Prue found out they were witches. A symbol of the Triquetra floated around them, and seeing them develop their powers the first time. A phrase was whispered, "The Power of Three will set us free!"

Lisa stared at those images, feeling guilty, for spying on them. She shook her head. She muttered to herself. "This is not the time to look at her memories! I must FIND Phoebe. Now. Where is she?"

She focused on Phoebe. The core of her being. Her eyes closed, she imagined herself 'there', with Phoebe. A whisper was heard that caused Lisa to open her eyes instantly. "L-lisa?"

A bedraggled Phoebe could be seen, clothes torn, and ripped in dozens of places, lacerated wounds on her arms, chest, and legs. Lisa gasped, and said, "Phoebe!?"

"Oh.. I'm ..so weak. Where...am I?", spoke a weakened Phoebe, with a hoarse whisper.

Lisa's heart filled with horror and sadness. "It's..hard to explain. ..I'm..in your mind."

Phoebe looked a little woozily at Lisa, clutching her bloody forehead, with a hand over a gash. "My mind? Then...what's wrong with me?"

Lisa sighed. "I don't...know. I know that somehow I can come here, and..talk to you." She sighed, and touched Phoebe's shoulder very gently. It still brought a visible wince to her body.

"Oh... I...we cast a spell...didn't we?" Phoebe stated, as if she already knew.

Lisa nodded quietly. "Seems so. And you're in a coma..of sorts. But...looking at you, it looks like you have been through a major battle."

Phoebe looked down at her hands, and herself. Her eyes widened in surprise. "Why? What's going on?"

Lisa knelt at Phoebe's feet. "You know you can't kill?"

Phoebe nodded. "I knew that already." Lisa knew she didn't have to ask. "Price to pay, you think?" Lisa's voice changed to a rebuking tone. Phoebe looked away, ashamed.

"But...why are you here, Lisa? To scold me like a little girl? I thought Prue would do that instead - ", was Phoebe's defensive tone.

Lisa sighed. "I don't know why I'm here. I, for some reason, probably am here to help you but you don't want it... I can just leave." Lisa just had about enough of Phoebe's whining. She stood up and turned to leave.

Phoebe reached out with an outstretched hand, saying, "Wait! Don't go. I feel ... sickened by what I did. I'm sorry. I don't know why I didn't protest more. Maybe...it was just I wanted to test it, to see how far it went. The last...vanquish..er..battle, Kevin helped us, but... I did do the spell, but I didn't feel any different...granted Prue was in my body...and I in hers, but... she didn't feel any different. I ... guess I was feeling a little restricted."

"Restricted...how?"

"Restricted...by not being able to take part of the "Power of Three" anymore...even though I am, still...techincally."

"Power of Three? Um, okay... I'll have to ask later. So basically you wanted to test the limits."

Phoebe nodded regretfully, her eyes filled with shame.

Lisa sighed. "There is no shame in not wanting to not be able to kill occasionally. I..I've been away, a lot. I've not been around the Tomorrow People in, oh, 5 years."

This had Phoebe's curiousity piqued. "Why not?"

"I wanted to be normal. I managed to block out most of my powers. Occasionally my telepathy wrecks havoc with my dates, when it leaks out." Lisa's laughter turned bitter.

"But..why? I couldn't understand not having powers now. But...at the beginning...I suppose I would understand, but...I had viewed things as a game... but it's life." Phoebe softly spoke this with conviction.

"I ... I don't know. It just seems like Normal isn't really an option anymore." Lisa sighed with frustration.

"It is. Did you ever consider that Normal could be just different for you, than it is for others?"

"What do you mean, Phoebe?"

"I mean that... What's normal to me, is normal to you, is not normal to others. Everyone has their own opinions of what is normal, y'know?" Phoebe smiled softly.

"You know.. I feel better now. I guess I was just trying to figure out why I had gone ahead with the spell. It was to be a real part of the Power of Three. I am part of it already." She continued with a grin. "Now. Let's go home."

Lisa nodded with a tremelous smile. "I guess."

Lisa closed her eyes. A fierce expression of concentration formed on her face, and vanished from view. Lisa was lifted higher and higher from that grey expanse of mist. ]/

Lisa involutionarily jerked her body back, eyes wide open, and breathing heavily. "Whoa. What was that?"

She sat backwards on the floor with a thump. Phoebe moaned softly, stirring, arm moving upwards to her head. She blinked softly. "Ohhhhh...what hit me?"

I laughed. "A mack truck, Pheebs. A mack truck."

She grinned stupidly and giggled. Lisa smiled softly. "Welcome back, Phoebe."

Phoebe looked up into Lisa's face and smiled. "Thanks for the pep talk."

I looked at both of them with puzzlement evident on my face. "What?"

Phoebe shook her head. "Later, Prue. Let me get up.. Ooohh!" She was lifted up by Kevin and Cole's supporting arms. "Now I know what a sack of potatoes feels like!" She grinned toothily.

Lisa stood there awkwardly. "I should go."

Adam stepped forward. "Must you? Please... don't disappear again. We'll all miss you."

I looked at Adam. More like Adam would the most. It was obvious in his body language.

Lisa struggled inwardly, thinking about her choices. "....Y...yes. I will be back. It'll take some getting used to... I can't promise anything." Her face was uncertain, but somehow I knew she would figure things out soon enough.

Adam nodded softly. "I understand."

Megabyte rubbed his hands, and said, "Phoebe, welcome back! If you need me, I'll be at home. Wanna come Jade, and Rachel? Kevin? We're having Pizza tonight...it seems a bit crowded in here at the moment." He spared Lisa an apologetic glance, and whispered in her mind, [ I hope you do come back. You're pretty nice. ] Kevin shook his head. "Naw. I'll stay here a little longer."

Megabyte smiled. "Okay." The other two nodded, and the three vanished in a bright light, leaving Kevin, Cole, Piper, Phoebe, Adam, Lisa, and I.

Piper sensed the mood of the room, and piped up, "How about if we made some snacks? Cole, Kevin, Prue and Phoebe, would you mind coming in the Kitchen with me?"

Cole said brusquely, "Why?"

I gritted my teeth silently, and said, "Cole, They need to be alone." His face changed to one of understanding mixed in with slight embarrassment.

As we all went into the Kitchen, Piper exhaled, "Wow. What a day..."

**************************

Lisa nervously looked at the carpeting. Adam smiled softly to himself.

"I'm so glad you're back, Lisa. I've been wondering where you've been..."

Lisa sighed sharply. "Stop it, Adam. I stayed away, because I wanted to be normal..." A slight note of hesitation was noticed by Adam.

"But?"

"I .. talked to Phoebe...while I..was in there."

"Oh? What happened...?", was Adam's inquisitive response.

"Oh. Um. Things. We ..had a talk about what 'normal' meant. She..made me realize that I am actually a Tomorrow Person, and ..people have different senses of 'normalcy', that they associate as normal. I, in my mind, should stop denying I'm a Tomorrow Person."

Adam's eyes softened with compassion. He held himself still, although he wanted to reach out and give Lisa a hug, so badly, to comfort her in her time of need. Lisa somehow sensed Adam's need, and shied away slightly, as if not ready.

Lisa hugged herself tightly. Her eyes looked forlorn, yet slowly coming to realize something.

Adam prompted Lisa's silence with a question. "What about your feelings?"

"Oh. In my heart... I'm still not quite sure, Adam."

"I see." Those two words were spoken quietly, but had an undertone of compassion, and somewhat understanding.

Adam continued. "Take your time. We will still be here. You can talk to any of us. But... don't...leave again."

Lisa nodded solemnly, her eyes dark and promising. "My mom is probably worried about me. I need to go."

Adam smiled. "Aren't they always?" Lisa grinned in spite of herself.

She closed her eyes and vanished in a static burst of light.

Adam sighed softly, running his hand through his hair. He knows he still misses her, and will wait for her.

A gentle whisper was heard in Adam's mind. [ Don't worry, Adam... I'll be back. ]

Adam's mouth curved up in a gentle smile, and his heart was floating. Yes. She would be back.
