"Is it live, or is it a tube of toothpaste?” Wrestlers and Farmboys, Moonlight Skinnydipping, Hot Lockerroom Sex and Tender Bedroom Kisses. Real Beef blends fantasy and reality along with theatrical storytelling and dance to help a queer boy discover love in the Heartland. In the first story, which premiered at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Theatre as part of the 2000 Honolulu Gay and Lesbian Cultural Festival, a teenage boy fuses an erotic wrestling fantasy with his bedtime grooming to create a hilarious and over-the-top bathroom encounter. A second tale explores the courtship of a science nerd and a farmboy in the rural Midwest. Music by Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Culture Club and Billy Joel creates a nostalgic landscape for a journey that sheds light on the complexity and power of First Love. In addition to his 7 years as a dancer with Iona Pear Dance Theatre, creator/performer David DeBlieck has produced several theatre and dance events in Hawaii, including Canticles of Salvation at Tenney Theatre, Dust to Dust at Kumu Kahua Theatre and Portrait of a Sissy at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Real Beef will be David’s last solo production in Hawaii before departing to share his work with the rest of the world. Real Beef director Jill Rolston-Yates has acted in many local productions, including The Waiting Room and Silang Tan Mu at UHM and Of Mice and Men at Manoa Valley Theatre. She toured with the Ed Sakamoto production of Manoa Valley to Los Angeles and was the first American awarded the Japan Cultural Affairs Bureau Visiting Theatre Artist Fellowship.
