Just how does he do that?

The following four steps show how a carving is done in glass. I actually developed it as a display for my daughter's school room when I did a little "show-n-tell" there.

It is very basic, showing simple examples for each step in the process.

For safety, the edges of the glass are covered with tape.

Regular white shelf contact paper is used to cover the glass.

Then an image is draw on the contact paper. In this case a compute generated image is spray glued to the contact paper.

Using an Xacto knife, carefully cut out the area to be carved. Glass can be scratched by the blade, so cut very carefully staying on the lines.

Anywhere the contact paper is left on the glass will remain clear.

The glass is then blasted. A sign that the blasting may be finished is a brownish tinge around the design on the contact paper.

You can always stop and feel the design. The edges give you a good "feel" as to how deep the blasting has gone.

Remove the contact paper and clean the glass.

Remember - the edges of the blasting are very sharp! A good glass cleaner works well.

When the design gets wet it sort of fades away, but comes right back when it dries.
