Here's an interesting little piece of flashed glass. Flashed glass has a thin layer of color on one side of usually clear glass. Sometimes you can also get flashed on colored glass, which makes for interesting blasting.

The object is to blast through the color into the clear. On this piece of test glass, you can see different shades of the red flashing as I blasted partially though it on the bottom.

Wood can also be fun to blast on. This piece is redwood with vertical grain, that is the grain runs from the top to the bottom of the piece rather than along the length or width.

Blasting takes the softer grain out leaving the harder grain remaining but greatly textured and lower in profile.

I find that hand carving designs for wood seems to work the best, however plastic stick-on letters work well too.

initials.jpg (100939 bytes) This is also a wood carving but done in pine. Pine is a nice soft wood for blasting, however the grain is much larger than redwood. Also the grain is quarter sawn instead of vertical, so it appears as little waves rather then the thin lines of grain in redwood. This piece is about 5" wide and has been antiqued for effect. It makes a nice personalized curio for desk or shelf.
