Brief Biography | |||||||||||||||||
Chekhov was born in 1860 and raised in Taganrog. He was the grandson of a serf and the son of a grocer. He died in 1904 of tuberculosis, only three short years after happily marrying actress Olga Knipper. He was the author of several short stories and plays. Chekhov did not use literature for "preaching" and he was often condemned for this. He was mostly insterested in the ironies of human nature. His matter-of-fact style proves very effective. His stories may seem plain at first, but this is part of their power; people can relate to them. People could identify with the scenes in the play by seeing the similarities in their own lives and in the events of their nation.
