I recently purchased this book - my first "how to" book on the craft of writing. It struck me as a workbook well representative of what a real workshop might be like. There are ten chapters, each a lesson on one key element of good fiction. Professor Novakovich offers a brief essay, with plenty of advice, followed by 10-12 exercises. The exercises are basically short practice pieces; 1, maybe 2 pages suggested. Some are meant to hone certain techniques while others to nurture inspiration and creativity. Several follow-up questions are included with each exercise to allow for self-critique. Not only do I hope to acquire some literary chops with this book, but I also expect it will be a lot of fun to work through. To check out my progress, click here.
