He Knew

I remember nights
when ice drew down the shades
across the windows,
shut us in as dark fell,
to a yellow kitchen
where we sat and told the day.
Mama had an eye for style,
the lamplight pooled around you,
held you close.
You could forget
the lies the cold wind
whispered in your ears.
Then Daddy's voice
began, slipping down along
the smoky golden rays
to wind around your soul,
he read us scripture.
patient as we were young,
he didn't mind the way we
kicked our feet against the kitchen chairs,
pulled faces at the windows.
He just read along, he knew
back then,
that if I close my eyes today,
I'll hear each word he said.
