Happy Birthday, Lord
(On Christmas Day)
It is your birthday soon, sweet Lord.
And I have looked for you
To give you my regards.
I've looked for you in shops
Which, overfilled with glittery things,
Did hurt my eyes
So that I saw you not.
I've looked for you in busy streets
Bedecked with cheerful lights,
I heard the songs that spoke of you -
My heart was cheered -
But only for a while,
Amid this noise of loud good cheer
Your voice I could not hear.
I've looked for you in crowds of men
Thinking you might be there.
I saw these men, pompous and vain
Buying expensive gifts
For their vain wives and mistresses.
And yet in spite of all this good will
Expressed but once a year,
I felt so sad, dear Lord,
Your absence here I felt so so keenly.
I looked among the young
Who dance and love their nights away
Their music shattering my ears.
But still I searched in vain.
And deeply saddened by all this
I turned my back on all of it
To take my search elsewhere.
'Twas then I saw this child
Who, filled with awe, was staring at a crib.
Her tongue was big in her slack mouth,
And spittle flecked her chin.
Her eyes did slightly slant.
I turned to go,
Surely you won't be here, I thought.
But as the child looked up at me
And smiled her angel's smile
I realised that here at last
I'v found what I'd been looking for.
Happy birthday, Lord!
