Dear Visitor
Recently, I purchased this 'new'
old book on Japan - it's a paperback book published in 1923
by French publisher "Berger-Levrault, éditeurs / Paris - 136, Boulevard
Saint Germain"
The title of this book is "Le Japon Souriant - ses samouraďs, ses
bonzes - ses geishas" (Smiling Japan
- its Samurai, its monks - its geisha)
the author is Robert Chauvelot. As it happens the book is in really good
condition too, no foxing and
little or no pages that turned brown. It's a travelogue by a French writer visiting Japan in the Taisho
period (early 1920's). A lot of travel literature has been produced prior
and after that year but what made
me buy this book is because of it's photograpic reproductions and a lot of 'cute'
clipart by contemporary
artists, don't ask me which ones... there are no credits in this book, a lot of the
clipart seems to come
straight from Hokusai manga though. So without further ado, here's a
selection...
Happy clicking !

The Imperial Hotel was demolished - apart from the lobby - and was replaced
shortly before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics by the 'New Imperial'.
The lobby was torn down and has been built up again outside Tokyo.
