A truly lovely
sight - the view
from
Something I dearly miss in the place
the plane 8 miles
high
where I live 'jidohanbaiki' or vending
machines. You see them everywhere in
Japanese streets, this one sells CD's
The delightful inner garden of the 'Shima'
Ochaya
I spotted this local 'ramen' vendor one night
in Kanazawa. The 'Shima' is now set up as
a
when I was out taking a stroll in Yao-city,
museum - it's a house of assignation where
Geisha
Yao is a city close to Osaka and 'ramen' are
used to entertain their customers - the rest of
the
noodles. Watch the late Juzo Itami's hilarious
street is indeed a pleasure quarter...
movie "Tampopo" !!
What can I say ? I always fancied plucking
the strings of a samisen and that is just what I did in 1995...
I tried to play "Sakura, Sakura" and the first notes went
really well, much to my own surprise...!!!
This shop caters for Geisha and Maiko and other professional performers of
Japanese traditional music and hey it was just great !!! (Kanazawa
1995)
From a shoeshop to the gleaming postmodern
highrise buildings the modern Japan manifests itself...
Look at the strange 'Japlish' (mix of Japanese and English)
announcing their business and go in and buy or taste the stuff... Japan is full of
wonders...The tall glass
faced building with the beautiful reflection in it recalls strangely enough the
song of one of the eighties most underestimated bands called "The Blue
Nile" I love their album 'A walk across the rooftops'.
I once saw "Tokyo-ga" by
German film director
Wim Wenders years ago...he made this reportage
about the people who fabricated this.
It's fake food but never mind you can see
exactly what you're gonna get and it's really
beautiful.
Barrels of Sake lined up in front of some
shrine,
I'm a real sucker for this, you know...
I love this beverage - icecold in summer & warm
in wintertimes
Mmmm, I just love the taste of 'atsukan' - hot
Sake - it really warms your spirit !!!
Tech
& Travel Stuff
I carried a Minolta
700si(TM) Dynax (Maxxum) SLR body with 28-105mm and 100-300mm zoom
lenses.
Practically all of my pictures were taken with the 28-105 which I consider a
very versatile lens. These pix were taken on my 1995 holiday and - NO -
I'm not employed by the Kanazawa Tourist Authority or whatever !!
I
also relied on the readings of my camera instead of using an exposuremeter which gave
surprising results
sometimes...
I travelled by myself taking good use of
"Lonely
Planet - Japan travel survival kit"
by Chris Taylor,
Robert Strauss,
Tony Wheeler & many others (October 1994 edition)
"Japan
Handbook" by J.D.
Bisignani (Moon Publications, Inc. 1993 edition)
"Frommer's
Comprehensive Travel Guide Japan '94 - '95"
by Beth Reiber & Janie Spencer (1994 edition))
all of these guidebooks have NEW editions by now (1999)
I
mainly use slide film:
'OLYMPUS
CO. (TM) ES-10'
film & slide scanner to convert these slides to JPEG images.
