Touring New Zealand

Getting ready to ski down the Turoa slope

Coming from a tropical country, I have always wondered how it feels to have snowflakes falling on you, and more particularly, to ski down a snow-covered slope.

But thanks to Brandon, a Swiss friend, and his other friends, I finally had the opportunity to do some skiing. As an added feature, I had a very able ski instructor in the person of my friend.

This picture shows me in my ski boots, just getting ready to ski down the Turoa slope with my new friends...

The Rotary Club in Palmerston North arranged for a hosting by its fellow club in Napier of overseas students of Massey University. This was my first opportunity to get out of Palmerston North and visit another New Zealand city.

I had a wonderful time in this trip and I was able to see the twin cities of Napier and Hastings. These cities, being situated on the western part of New Zealand, have a warmer climate compared to Palmerston North.

Little did I know that, in 1993, I would be frequenting Napier when I would be writing my masterate thesis.

Being fascinated with snow and skiing, I went to Stratford town, where one could get to Mt. Taranaki, said to be the twin of Mt. Fuji for its almost-perfect cone.

I wanted to do some skiing again, but unfortunately the weather was not very cooperative (it never is, in New Zealand, that is). Anyway, the most I was able to do was gaze at the snow-draped mountain, which used to go by the name, Mt. Egmont.

Again, I never realized that I will keep coming back to Stratford when I would be writing my masterate thesis.

The snow-draped Mt. Taranaki waits to be conquered by a novice skier.
