Menteri Pertanian dan Industri Makanan (Datuk Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem): Tuan Speaker, the total amount of animal feed produced locally for the period 1993/1997 is RM852,000 that is RM184,000 in 1993, RM195,000 in 1994, RM242,000 in 1995, RM223,000 in 1996 and RM293,000 in 1997. Import of animal feed is insignificant, confined mostly to sheep feed from Semenanjung Malaysia and a small quantity of fish feed and prawn feed from overseas. In 1997, the state only imported 1500 metric tonnes of sheep feed. The government is taking it as a challenge to reduce the import of raw feed material especially for poultry and other animals. In 1997, Sarawak imported about 210,000 tonnes of maize worth RM95 million. Maize constitutes 50% to 60% of feed ingredient. We are looking at the possibility of large scale planting of maize locally and also doing research and development on the use of locally available product like palm kernel cake and tapioca. The price of poultry feed has increased by about 33% in 1997 as compared to 1994. The increase is due to global shortage of maize as well as the effect of ringgit depreciation. Sarawak is self-sufficient in poultry, eggs and pork and is a nett exporter of poultry, meat and pork. In 1997, the state exported 250,000 tonnes of frozen chicken meat valued at RM17 million and 1,125 tonnes of pork valued at RM9 million. The government will continue to give support and further develop these two sub-sectors. As for ruminant meat, that is beef and mutton, Sarawak is a nett importer. In 1997, the state imported 5,700 tonnes of beef and beef products valued at RM63.6 million and 322 tonnes of mutton valued at RM5.8 million The local production only contributes an insignificant 3% to the ruminant
meat consumed in Sarawak. In the light of this situation, the government
is emphasising on the development of ruminant sector especially on small
ruminant and buffaloes to boost local production.
