The second triumvirate.

Lepidus, a very wealthy man, was suggested as the compromise man, and the three of them made the second triumvirate. To

secure, that Antonius and Octavian would not start a new civil war, Antonius agreed to marry Octavian’s sister Octavia.

The Senate gave all of them consular power for five years.

Lepidus became the ruler of Spain, Antonius received Gaul, and Octavian got Africa and Sicily. All of the three men were

granted a permission to stay in Rome.

As soon as Octavian was sure that he wouldn,t be stabbed in the back, he moved his army against the conspirrators.

In 42 Octavian met both Cassius’ and Brutus’ army at Philippi.

Octavian was no good as a general, but he found men who were and made them chief officers.

Antonius and Octavian started to sqeeze out Lepidus, and he became more and more dissatisfied.

In 38 the triumvirate was renewed, but in 35 Lepidus rebelled.

However he was crushed and was forced to retire.

The moment Lepidus were gone, there were no one who could stop, Antonius and Octavian from starting a war.
