Here we will list tools that we tried and that we use, free ones and others!
When coming online, many people don't know that there are a lot of free resources in the internet - and as soon as they begin to realize that there is something as freeware, they begin to download and download.. and don't know what to use how.
We will not list a lot of programs here, but those, that we can suggest to be used by nearly anybody. You don't have to be a computer wizzard to handle these programs, most of them are easy to use and/or have a good helpfile/tutorial. Note that we only list tools here that are in relation to homepage construction, maintenance and promotion. (so no browsers and e-mail progs, for instance, check our page about Free- and Shareware!)
1. Html - editors
Anansi - This free editor comes with a tutorial. It is not (yet) to construct frames and java etc. (you can if you know the html coding yourself, because basically it is a texteditor), but it is to do whatever else. Results can be checked in the browser of your choice (or in more than one). It's great features are the projectmanager and the uploadmanager. So you can construct and manage sites with many different pages, and the uploadmanager keeps track of all changes, so with the built in ftp-programm you just upload the files that have changed. Our site is managed in that way. It is no problem to take in html pages constructed with other editors. Recommended, as everything on that page!
Arachnophilia - This editor is careware - you don't pay money, but read on the authors page! It is basically a texteditor, but with all the new features built in for easy use. You can also check what you've done in browsers, and it has some special features built in, so the multicolor status allows you to easyli check the html codes. Some toolbars to choose help you to fill in by a click the appropriate html-code for a specific function. Supports frames and much more. Definitively worth to have!
FTP program
Ftp programs are used to publish the html-pages (including all images) in the net by transferring the files to the server your homepage will be situated.
If we use one, then WS-FTP. This is free to use for private and educational use. It can be downloaded at most providers sites and for sure on the resources that are on our page with Free- and Shareware
ZIP program
Zip programms are used to compress files that you send to someone via the net, or that you offer to download from your site. To extract these files, you also need one.
The standard is set by Win-ZIP, that a lot of providers offer to download, and for sure you will find it in the lists of the adresses on our page with Free- and Shareware
Utilities
Mapmaker 32 - A free imagemapper, that works good. Supports circle and square linkfields. We do not know of any other free imagemapper - if you know others we would like to test them. (e-mail: [email protected])
Microsoft GIF-animator - (go to download page) - this is a simple gifanimator, but with a little patience you can work out pretty good animations. And - it is free.
CyberSpider - this is a link test program. It is shareware, can be used 60 days for free. We recommend it if you have a site to handle with a lot of links, CyberSpider checks them and gives you a detailed report. (costs: $ 35)
Submit Wolf - this is a program you must buy. It is a powerful tool to promote websites, and if you have a commercial site, you have two possibilities: Let someone promote your site for you and pay for this service, or you buy that program and do it yourself. It depends on your companysize, small companies will let it be made for them, but big companies with many sites or huge sites will have the people to promote their sites by themselves.
