AND OUR STORY CONTINUES...

The Pars army is fleeing accross the Atorobatene plains back to the relative safety of the Capital of Ekubatana. Darun's men, lead by Bafreez, are protecting the King's escape when a group of Lusitanian soldiers caught up with them.
The enemies seem to be led by a man in an iron mask, who takes charge and asks for Andragoras's surrender. Bafreez put himself between his King and the advancing Lusitanians to permit him to escape, but he is bested by the mysterious stranger and slain.
Surrounded by Lusitanian soldiers, the Pars King is taken prisoner.
Meanwhile, Darun and Arslan are on their way north of Atoropatene, going towards the Bashuru Mountains. Darun knows that a friend of his, banished 3 years ago by Andragoras, took refuge in those same mountains, and could hide them.
On the way, they are stopped by a small boy wielding a bow and arrows, that boy being Darun's friend's servant, a liberated slave, Eram.
After recognizing Darun, Eram led them to Narcasse's mountain retreat.
There, Darun explains Pars's state, Karlan's betrayal, and the peril facing Ekubatana, and endeavours to get help from Narcasse, who had been known as a genius strategist in his time as secretary in the Royal Palace.
Narcasse seems untouched by their plea for help, and pretexts the fact that he has long been removed from the workings of power, and now seeks only enlightenment through his art.
The next morning, Pars soldiers come to Narcasse's retreat, sent by Karlan, asking for the whearabouts of the Crown Prince.

Darun and Arslan are watching the exchange from the rafters.

Through the discussion they overhear, they learn of Bafreez's death at the hands of the Lusitanians. Darun, angered by what they did to the old campaigner, almost burst out of their hiding place to avenge him but was brought to reason by Arslan.
