Programming sounds on a new synth is daunting for even the most
experienced of synthesists, but for a beginner it can seem like an
insurmountable task. The first step is to understand how the synth
works. All synths, with the exception of new models using previously
undiscovered synthesis methods, fall into a category of synthesizer
type. By finding out a bit about that type of synthesiser you will be
half-way towards programming sounds on your new synth.
The best place to look is unlikely to be the manual. It has probably
been translated from the original Japanese into English via Swahili.
The internet or your local library is a much better starting point. By
understanding the architechture of the synth you will be well on your
way to creating new sounds.
-
Track down an editng program for your synth on the internet.
Programming sounds with a good editor on a computer screen is so
much easier than using the tiny screen on most synths. It is also
easier to understand what you are doing when you can see the
internal structure of the synth in graphic form.
-
Even if you don't understand how your synth works don't be afraid
to experiment. Find out how to enter edit mode and press away!
You will not break anything and will probably learn a lot while
creating some new sounds. Even if you do manage to wipe all the
internal presets, there is always a way to restore them.
