Be disciplined, but never force yourself to write music. You are
unlikely to create anything worthwhile if you are not in the mood
and it will turn something that should be enjoyed into a chore. If
you must meet a deadline to deliver two hours of music by 9:00am
to-morrow and you have only written the first three minutes, ignore
the above advice!
-
Always try and finish a piece of music before moving on. If you
don't it will most probably remain unfinished.
-
Never let yourself be intimidated by other peoples work. It is easy
to feel you could never sound like U2 or The Chemical Brothers etc.,
but if you had access to a multi-million pound studio and the advice
of a top producer and engineer you might be surprised!
-
There is no such thing as "writer's block". This is a "Catch 22"
condition that is created when you combine paranoia and an "off-day".
Just because you spent 8 hours fruitlessly staring at your keyboard
today doesn't mean you have lost the ability to write. Start thinking
that you have lost the ability to write and you probably will.
-
Always try and write music near a window. The downside of the odd
distraction is worth the upside of the odd inspiration.
-
If you are feeling uninspired about writing music, use your time to
program a sound or two on one of your synths. You could spark off
an idea and at the very least you will have some new sounds to work
with next time.
