Madame Matisse ("The Green Stripe") 1905 (above) - This celebrated portrait of Matisse's wife is one of the most audacious of his Fauvist works, as the use of a non-naturalistic color in the human face is much more startling than it would be in a landscape, say, or a still-life. In spite of this bold stroke and the vigorous brushwork, the picture is much less sensuous than many of Matisse's works of this period and has a feeling of intellectual rigor about it. The green stripe, indeed, seems calculated with great care, for the powerful accent it provides stops the face being overwhelmed by the strong flat colors of the background.
I offer you these additional Matisse works, without comment....enjoy.
