The Venango Camera Club
Founded in the 1930s and located in Venango County, Pa., the Venango Camera Club is one of the oldest active camera clubs in the country. Meetings are in the downstairs meeting room of the Oil City Public Library every third Tuesday. Meeting times are 7:00-9:00 pm, and the agenda varies from one month to the next. On odd months, slide competitions are held, with three volunteers from within the club serving as judges. Scoring is done according to PSA guidelines, with points accumulated according to impact/interest, composition, and camera technique. A total of 24 points can be accumulated, with 24 being a perfect score. On opposite months, workshops and presentations are held. In May, the club's regular season concludes with the annual Slide of the Year competition, where guest judges are brought in from outside of the club for impartial judging of slides from the year's previous competition. Only slides having scored 15 points or more are eligible for this competition, so this is truly a "cream of the crop" event.
The club mourns the passing of former member Don Shaner in January, 2000. See a tribute to Don here.
