Finding Refuge?
With her head upon the table,
        tears streaming from her eyes.
        Another day, life with him,
        is another day she dies.
        The bruises on her face,
        the scars so deep within.
The children tugging at her skirt,
        as another day begins.
        The bacon wasn't done right,
        the eggs a little burnt.
Then his slap hit her hard.
        Wondering why she hadn't learned.
        Ten years of this torture,
        his power and abuse.
In ten years she faded fast,
she had nothing more to lose.
        She bundled up their children,
their life she had to leave.
        To make things feel normal,
in this too she was deceived.
        The government gave her money,
on which she barely got by.
        Her ex-husband promised her payments.
        Yet another lie.
        She was just a victim,
        time and time again.
        Their children suffer the strains.
Of the damage we can't amend.

Authors note
Every 3 seconds a woman
in North America is beaten by
her spouse.
The effects that it leaves
on children particularly takes
a life time to fix.
If you can't leave for yourself,
leave for them.
