Every day, we wear, drive, turn on, view, and use design. Right now you're looking at a computer screen. Did you ever say to yourself, "It could use more curves, and a new paint job". If you have, then this is the page for you.

My dream is to one day, build my own home and everything in it, right down to the kitchen sink. I want to design the car I drive, the clothes I wear, the streets I live, everything. Ever since I saw the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, I've wanted to design. He designed not just the building, but the furniture, the fixtures, the glass, and even the carpets. Everything he designed was brought to life by his team of craftsmen. He was in total control and had creative freedom.

So I want to share my ideas of design for the next century. I hope it sparks some interest, or at least gets you thinking.

Design theory

In every discipline, there are some universal, time tested theories and principles that one can apply. The theory that I try to follow is that anything is possible.

Industrial Design

This heading covers many different disciplines. Design for consumers is one of the most important. Not only must it function well, it must be able to be attractive to compete with the competition.

  • This page from Porsche called Creating where Porsche reveals their design philisophy.
  • Concept cars from the 1996 North American International Auto Show covered by Car and Driver Magazine.
  • What about recent developments with the use of aluminum in cars? Cost and practicality vs. its light weight and effects on fuel consumption? Check out the Dodge Prowler, the Acura NSX, and Audi A8.
  
  

• Furniture

  Like Frank Lloyd Wright, I want to design my own furniture. Different materials, ergonomics, and color all play a role to good furniture design.

  • I dont know why I'm putting this in, I guess because it's different, but, Instrumental Furniture is probably correct in stating that you won't find it anywhere else (thank God!).
  
  

• Fixtures

  Lights, faucets, door handles, light switches, storage, even flooring are areas to be designed.

Fashion

Nowadays, big name companies a selling their simple clothes for outrageous prices. How about a complete suit by me for, let's say 50 bucks?

• Shoes

  Nike is the leader in shoe design. They keep coming up with new technologies and new designs while the competition is stale. They design right down to the shoelaces. Take a look at their site Nike.com.

  • Heres an informative site about Common Shoe-Design Flaws. I don't like the actual shoes from this company, but read what they have to say anyway.
  
  

• Eyewear

  Not given much thought, eyewear could be vastly improved.

• Headgear

  Hats of all shapes and sizes make any wardrobe.

• Jewelry

  Diamonds are a girl's best friend. But they should be in an equally beautiful setting. That's where designers come in.

Fonts

Fonts can be designed as well. There are many different fonts used today, with all types of names. So, what's a few more gonna hurt?
