Contemporary Chinese Art
“Wheel,” Duan Fu Chang, Gouache on rice paper, 31 x 32 inches. Yunnan Art
Traditionally, doves are viewed as the symbols of faithfulness and compatibility. These doves rest beside the figure and a cart--an everyday tool in life. The spokes of the wheel symbolize the Buddhist doctrine of perpetual cycles of existence. This body of work is the first collection of unique contemporary art from the mountainous Yunnan Province of China. During the Cultural Revolution, this style of painting was unacceptable, and artists were forced to paint at night and burn their paintings each morning to keep from being arrested.
