Contemporary Chinese Art
“Flute Player (Fusion),” Yeung Shing, Gouache on rice paper, 28 x 28 inches, Yunnan Art
From a traditional standpoint, music was linked with universal harmony and mathematical relationships. This artwork, set against a colorful background, epitomizes the Yunnan province celebration of music, dance, and ceremony. Note the shallow space of the picture plane, typical of some ancient Chinese paintings. The thickness of the gouache paint is absorbed by the rice paper and plays up the effect of Chinese ink.
