Contemporary Chinese Art
“Harvest,”Fan Ming Hwa, Gouache on rice paper, 33 x 33 inches. Yunnan Art.
Many of the hill tribe peoples of China and Southeast Asia play ceremonial reed-pipe instruments. The universal symbol of fertility, maize (corn), is displayed in the background, while peaches and the stag (deer), both symbols of longevity and immortality, are also shown. The figures are dressed in the clothing of the southwest Aini tribe of Yunnan. The peach is also associated with marriage and springtime--a time of rebirth.
