Book and Movie Reviews

by Ligeia

I used to hate doing book reports. They were the scourge of my middle school (called "junior high" in those days) experience. This is not to say I hated to read -- far from it, I devoured books, usually mysteries and science-fiction/fantasy.  I was insulted by my school's requirement that students turn in a book report for every class, including gym.  I disliked the implications that I had to be assigned reading, as if I was one of the other TV-hypnotized potato-heads. So to be evil, I would never do a book report on a book I really liked.  It was somehow against my principals.

Anyway, enough about me and my long-ago school-days traumas.  I have since become very opinionated about what I read and what I see, the effect of more than three decades' exposure to trash.  Most of the trash has been of the visual sort; by that I mean movies and television.  It is easier to avoid a badly-written book than it is to avoid a horrid movie or TV show, especially if one is either trapped in someone else's house, or one has paid one's admission and is therefore stuck in the theater.  (I think I once saw a movie so bad that I do believe I demanded my money back, but the actual work's name and plot has been mercifully wiped from my mind.)  This site will probably have more commentary on general movie trends rather than reviews of actual films I have seen, since I see so few.  Expect plenty of opinions on films I don't plan to see; I see no reason why I have to sit through the torture of an entire full-length feature to have an opinion on it, especially when today's movie promos serve so well to give the gist of every plot.

I think the links below are pretty self-explanatory (especially the image map if your browser accepts javascript); "Books" are my book reviews, "Movies" are of course film review/opinion, "Me" will be done if I ever get interested enough about myself to devote a whole web page to me (as if all my web sites weren't already about me), there is the guestbook of course, and a forum I set up for possible future discussions.
