Vegetable garden

We grow a wide variety of vegetables here and in parts of the orchard area.

The soil is fertile, friable and has been well maintained for over 60 years.

Growing mainly the popular vegetables such as potatoes, brassicas, root crops and legumes, we do try to spice things up with a few new (to us) ones each year. This year, for example, we have tried Kohl Rabi and Ruby Chard and have throughly enjoyed both.

We carry out a three yearly rotation system and use a lot of organic manure and fertilizer to keep the soil up to atandard.

There is also an area where we can grow strawberries and where we can shelter small plants at the beginning of the season when they are hardening off.

The greenhouse area contains two greenhouses and two permanent cold frames.

We try to grow all our own flowers and vegetables from seed in these houses and keep one heated, electically, in the Winter to keep tender perennials.

The left hand house is new and was constructed on the site of one that was taken down and destroyed because it was so badly neglected. The other house is holding it's own and will last for another couple of years. However we have made provision to replace it.
