Between them, the LGB Society, the LGB Representative Officer and Leeds Student Friend offer several kinds of support to LGB students at Leeds University.
The Drop-In
The LGB Society co-ordinates a Drop-In session each weekday lunchtime during term-time, held in the LGB Resource Centre. The Drop-In is an opportunity for students who are unsure about their sexuality, who are having problems, or who just want a moan to come and talk to someone about it face-to-face and in complete confidence. We try to provide both a male and a female listener each day so that if you are only comfortable talking to someone of a particular sex, you can do so.
Drop-In is also the time when you can obtain information, leaflets, free condoms and lube, to borrow a book from the LGB Resource Library or to just chill-out over a cup of coffee.
One day a week is set aside for committee meetings, but everyone is welcome to attend these and if you stumble in on one when you want to talk to someone, it can usually be arranged for you to go off somewhere else with them for a quiet chat.
One thing to bear in mind if you come to the Drop-In for a chill-out is that you may be asked to leave if someone comes by wanting to talk to someone in confidence.
Drop-In runs between 1.10 and 1.50 (approx) each weekday lunchtime during term-time.
Leeds Student Friend
Leeds Student Friend is a confidential listening and information line run by LGB students for LGB students at Leeds. It's the number to call if you want to talk to someone in complete confidence and anonymity or for information such as about the LGB Society and the Leeds and Manchester scenes.
Currently, it operates between 7.30pm and 10pm on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week during term-time, but there are plans to extend these hours.
The LGB Representative Officer
The LGB Officer is an elected Union official and sits on Union Council to represent the views of LGB students and ensure that Union activities and policies do not exclude or discriminate against LGB students.
They are responsible for co-ordinating LGB political activities and can also provide a degree of help to students facing discrimination and homo-/biphobia. Very often this means a referral to the Welfare Officer, the Women's Officer or the Union's Welfare Services, but it is often less intimidating for an LGB student to come to someone that they know is lesbian/gay/bisexual first.
Unfortunately, being a non-sabbatical position, the LGB Officer is not always available but it is possible to leave a message for them to contact you to arrange a time to meet up.
Currently there is no LGB officer . Please contact the Union Exec. or the Welfare Officer for details.
LGB Society Events
The LGB Society runs several welfare-oriented events each year, which in the past have included coming out workshops, safer sex talks and talks by Parent's Friend on coming out to parents.
Many find coming along to these events not only informative and reassuring, but also easier than coming to a Drop-In session to talk over the issues one to one.
See posters on the LGB Noticeboard (opposite ULTRA Travel) for details of events.
