Bus Station Goodbye

Through the rain drizzling down,
I turned around to see you there,
Sitting alone in your dark truck.

Our last kiss burned on my lips,
Your scent lingered on my skin,
Your softness memorized by my touch.

I pulled my hat low over my eyes
That stung with unshed tears;
My soul unwilling to part from you.

Three steps on the bus counted
Slowly as I held my breath;
Inside cavernous and empty.

Others paid no heed to me
As I found my seat and pressed
My knuckles to my trembling lips.

Pulling away from the station,
I looked back and saw you there
Alone still on that stormy night.

I cried hot desperate tears,
One for each 'no' that my heart
Screamed as the bus pulled away.

And as the cold rain fell silent,
I grieved for our quiet parting;
Knowing that I loved you even more.
