Hospital Acquired Pneumonia (HAP)
General Information
· For non-ICU, non-LTC patients refer to CAP Inpatient treatments
· Of all infections in hospitalized, pneumonia is associated with the highest mortality
· During hospital stays patients oropharyngeal tract becomes colonized with hospital-associated bacterial flora
· Colonization combined with elevated stress levels, immune impairment and other risk factors is a prescription for disaster
· Colonization frequently consists of S. aureus, and the SPACE organisms particularly P. aeruginosa, and the Enterobacteriaceae Klebsiella and Enterobacter
· The degree of acute care increases the seriousness of the infection and seems to be related to the organisms
