²      Lymphatic malignancy

²      Cells arise from the bone marrow

²      Behave as a solid tumor

§         Usually noted to be a slow growing mass

§         Lymph nodes become enlarged

§         Can be small or large

§         Don’t metastasize by may spread to other organs

§         The spleen can be and is frequently involved

²      Categorized as HD or NHL

§         NHL incidence has increased over the past 20 years probably related to HIV

²      Radiation exposure

²      Pesticide exposure

²      EBV

²      HIV NHL

²      Hereditary

²      Transplant drug use

²      Alkylating agent exposure NHL

 

*       Comparative Characteristics

*       Staged

²      I-IV

²      A = asymptomatic

²      B = symptomatic

²      NHL

§         Low grade

·        chemo sensitivity fair but used and or radiation

·        may convert to high grade

§         Intermediate grade

·        chemo sensitive

·        radiation

·        87% remission 73% survival

§         Patient with poor prognostic factors

·        > 65 years of age

·        very high LDH

·        Burkitt’s

·        Marrow, GIT, CNS involved

·        40% remission 26% survival

²      HD

§         Without advanced stage and without poor prognostic factors

§         70% cure
