THE GREATEST PLAYER EVER!!ALFREDO DI STEFANO This year (2000) Alfredo celebrated his 74th birthday, a month later he was elected as vice-President at Real Madrid. He also became the second most voted player, for the FIFA player of the Century Award behind Pele, but infront of fellow Argentinian Maradona. But if all facts should been put in Alfredo should have won it and the discussion around the vote about Maradona or Pele should never really have been a topic, if the statistic system that is used in USA to vote for the MVP in Basketball, Baseball, Icehockey or similar, Pele and Maradona would have come to short compared to Alfredo. But then again as FIFA proved the people running it seem to have a shortage of brain capacity to put out a fair and objective system of voting. Alfredo Di Stefano is the greatest player of all time, why not Pele? Well Di Stefano never got the chance to show himself in a World Cup, due to injury, and misfortunes. Pele is without a doubt the greatest player in World Cup history, but on club level even having scored over 1200 goals he never played in the though European leagues, but stayed loyal to Santos most of his life. Alfredo Di Stefano played and become the greatest player for 3 of the best or most famous teams in the world, starting in River Plate, then Millionares and the Real Madrid. Another thing that you should think of as well when you decide for yourself who is the best, Pele or Di Stefano? And that is Pele was always surrounded with the best players in the world when he played for Brazil and Santos, the Brazil side of 1970 have to be the greatest football side both nationally and on club level that ever fielded a soccer field. While Di Stefano made the teams he played for the best while he was there. But not to insult Pele to much, Pele is the greatest player ever to field a game at a world cup, but Di Stefano was the the best club player of them all. He played for 3 of the world most famous club teams, and was capped by 3 countries. His awards range from the Argentina championship to Copa America, Colombia league championship, the Spanish league, to the European Cup and World Club Cup. As well as many personal awards such as league top scorer to becoming the first player to receive the European Footballer of the Year award twice. Alfredo Di Stefano nicknamed "La Saeta Rubia", in English "the blond arrow", this due to his speed. Di stefano might be seen as the father of the European Cup, he was the inspiration and implacable maestro of a Real Madrid team which won the cup 5 times in a row. He scored in all the Finals he won, he is still the leading all time scorer in the European Cup and all other cups in Europe. Alfredo Di Stefano was born on July 4, 1926 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, his parents both Italian. He lived on a farm in the suburb of Buenos Aires, and it is thought of that the hard labour he had as a child contributed to his incredible stamina, being able to run himself into the ground for 90 minutes, as well as being able to have a career until he was 40 years old. When Alfredo was 12 he joined Los Cardales (a youth team), which he won the amateur championship with. At the age of 15, he joined South Americas and maybe the worlds most famous club, River Plate. He earned himself a place in the first team squad at the age of 16. River Plate, of the 40s was probably the best ever River side in their proved history, and at that time, their forward line had created a reputation of being feard by their opponents defence and was nicknamed "La Maquina" or "the Machine". Alfredo made his debut for the team as a right-winger. River Plate had at the time such players as "the maestro" Adolfo Pedernera, by Di Stefano considered the greatest player he ever saw in his life, Labruna also played at the same time. Due to all of the names and the domination River Plate had they loaned Alfredo to Huracan to better develop his already incredible skills with more playing time, then he would have gotten at River Plate. Maybe the loan was a bad idea since when Di Stéfano played against River Plate, he scored the winner. Alfredos goal, came 15 seconds into the game, and is most likely to be the fastest goal scored in the Argentine league. Alfredo nearly rated a goal a game for Huracan. In 1947, Pedernera was sold to Atlanta, and River Plate recalled Alfredo from Huracan to replace the maestro as their new enter forward. With the team River Plate had in the 40s, Alfredo and his partners in attack, usually Moreno and Labruna, became the most feared attack force in South America maybe the world at that time. The same year Alfredo got recalled, back to River Plate, they won the championship and scored an average 3 goals per game, Alfredo also became the leagues top goalscorer with 27 goals in 30 matches. The same year Alfredo made his debut for the Argentine national side, being picked amongst forwards such as Pontoni, Moreno, Pedernera and Labruna. The team played the Copa American and Alfredo became the second leading scorer behind Uruguay's Falero. Argentina retained their Copa America, but Alfredo only played one game for his national side apart from the games in the Copa America. |
